New to AA?

You’re Not Alone

If you’re questioning your relationship with alcohol, that’s okay. AA is a community of people who understand — and we’re here whenever you’re ready.

Is AA For You?

Not sure if AA is right for you? Here are some questions to consider — from the pamphlet “Is AA for You?”

  • Have you ever decided to stop drinking for a week or so, but only lasted for a couple of days?
  • Do you wish people would mind their own business about your drinking?
  • Have you ever switched from one kind of drink to another hoping it would keep you from getting drunk?
  • Have you had to have an eye-opener upon awakening during the past year?
  • Do you envy people who can drink without getting into trouble?
  • Have you had problems connected with drinking during the past year?
  • Has your drinking caused trouble at home?
  • Do you ever try to get “extra” drinks at a party because you don’t get enough?
  • Do you tell yourself you can stop drinking any time you want to, even though you keep getting drunk when you don’t mean to?
  • Have you missed days of work or school because of drinking?
  • Do you have blackouts — times you can’t remember what happened?
  • Have you ever felt that your life would be better if you did not drink?

If you answered “yes” to four or more of these questions, you may have a problem with alcohol. You’re welcome at any AA meeting — no commitment, no sign-up, and no judgment.

What to Expect at Your First Meeting

Walking into your first AA meeting can feel intimidating, but here’s what you should know:

  • No one will put you on the spot. You don’t have to speak, share, or even say your name.
  • Meetings are free. There are no dues or fees. A basket may be passed for voluntary contributions, but newcomers are never expected to contribute.
  • Your anonymity is protected. What’s shared in meetings stays in meetings.
  • There are different types of meetings:
    • Open meetings — Anyone is welcome, including friends and family
    • Closed meetings — For people who have a desire to stop drinking
    • Speaker meetings — One person shares their story
    • Discussion meetings — Open conversation around a topic
  • Meetings are available in-person, online, by phone, and in hybrid formats throughout the Denver metro area.
