Connecting people leaving treatment with the AA community — because the journey between the treatment center door and your first meeting shouldn’t be walked alone.
What Is Bridge the Gap?
One of the most critical moments in early recovery is the transition from a treatment facility to the AA community. The Bridge the Gap (BTG) program connects people leaving treatment with a temporary AA contact who can introduce them to local meetings and the fellowship.
How It Works
When someone in treatment requests a BTG contact, a committee member matches them with a volunteer of the same gender. The volunteer then:
- Makes contact before or within 24 hours of the person’s release from treatment
- Explains what to expect at an AA meeting
- Attends a meeting with the newcomer and introduces them to other sober members
- Explains sponsorship and the value of having a home group
- Helps the newcomer become familiar with AA literature
Volunteer Guidelines
As a BTG volunteer, you serve as a temporary contact — not a sponsor. Your role is to help bridge the gap between treatment and active AA participation.
What we do:
- Introduce newcomers to the program of Alcoholics Anonymous
- Meet them at a meeting and help them feel welcome
- Share our experience, strength, and hope
What we don’t do:
- We never meet anyone alone
- We do not provide financial support
- We do not give rides
- We do not provide social or counseling services
Get Involved
The BTG Committee meets the 2nd Saturday of each month at 9:00 AM (currently via Zoom).
