You’re Not Alone
If you’re questioning your relationship with alcohol, that’s okay. AA is a community of people who understand — and we’re here whenever you’re ready.
Is AA For You?
Not sure if AA is right for you? Here are some questions to consider — from the pamphlet “Is AA for You?”
- Have you ever decided to stop drinking for a week or so, but only lasted for a couple of days?
- Do you wish people would mind their own business about your drinking?
- Have you ever switched from one kind of drink to another hoping it would keep you from getting drunk?
- Have you had to have an eye-opener upon awakening during the past year?
- Do you envy people who can drink without getting into trouble?
- Have you had problems connected with drinking during the past year?
- Has your drinking caused trouble at home?
- Do you ever try to get “extra” drinks at a party because you don’t get enough?
- Do you tell yourself you can stop drinking any time you want to, even though you keep getting drunk when you don’t mean to?
- Have you missed days of work or school because of drinking?
- Do you have blackouts — times you can’t remember what happened?
- Have you ever felt that your life would be better if you did not drink?
If you answered “yes” to four or more of these questions, you may have a problem with alcohol. You’re welcome at any AA meeting — no commitment, no sign-up, and no judgment.
What to Expect at Your First Meeting
Walking into your first AA meeting can feel intimidating, but here’s what you should know:
- No one will put you on the spot. You don’t have to speak, share, or even say your name.
- Meetings are free. There are no dues or fees. A basket may be passed for voluntary contributions, but newcomers are never expected to contribute.
- Your anonymity is protected. What’s shared in meetings stays in meetings.
- There are different types of meetings:
- Open meetings — Anyone is welcome, including friends and family
- Closed meetings — For people who have a desire to stop drinking
- Speaker meetings — One person shares their story
- Discussion meetings — Open conversation around a topic
- Meetings are available in-person, online, by phone, and in hybrid formats throughout the Denver metro area.
